BBC News Report: 4D Immersive Space at Sedgemoor Care Home, Liverpool.

BBC-news-story

Our new space at Sedgemoor Care Home has been featured by the BBC today.

This inspirational space will embrace an immersive approach to dementia care and be used to support the improvement of the quality of life for service users.

The aim of creating this immersive experience is to enhance communication, increase a sense of personal identity, have an enjoyable activity in the company of others, to improve mood and well-being, to stimulate memories and to increase the individualisation of care.

Immersive content for the spaces will be developed together with service users and carers to build a collective voice and resilience. The content could facilitate a trip to the seaside or the remembrance of a service users wedding day through using personal photos, video recordings or music. This is a reflective, safe space to inspire memories and engage service users.

This is a fresh and exciting approach to treatment that is centered around the wellbeing of service users and their carers.

MCA Content Project Part 4 – Outstanding pupil presentations.

mca3

The first stage of our Content Creation project came to a close this week with the pupils of Manchester Communication Academy presenting their work.

Our teaching and learning lead, Gav, visited the academy to see the pupil’s creations and has written us this report…

“As the culmination of a huge project, I was invited to see the outcomes of the content creation work by one of the six year eight groups, that have been following the same programme of study.

Given the starting point of ‘Inspiration’ by year eight teachers of PE, the young content developers of tomorrow selected the development software to use, iMovie; researched the subject and selected the people who they considered to be inspiring.  From Jessica Ennis and Bradley Wiggins, to Felix Baumgartner and Neil Armstrong. The end result was four interlinked themes, built into 4D create and ready for the sharing.

What has struck me throughout our association with this project is the evident pride the content developers have in their work and ideas.  It was exciting to see how fired up the groups were about their own work and that of their colleagues. Throughout the sharing I was told what choices and adjustments to transitions they had made, or how they had found the right picture at the right resolution. Reflecting on tips we had offered but mainly the learning, skills and steer given by Alex Garry, their teacher.

All I can say is, their work, their choices and the activity they came up with was a pleasure to be part of. Sometimes I can be accused of ‘gushing’. I’m not going to apologise for that! Even though I am no longer a full-time teacher in a school, it was a ‘what I got into teaching for’ moment.  Beaming kids, asking questions, achieving, being proud of their work and being proud of their teacher.  I am a gusher!

One of the most exciting and rewarding hours I have spent in any of our rooms. Since moving to MediaCityUK, the hub of digital content development in our North-West regional home, I can see how the young content creators in schools today are being given the creative and technical skills and aspirations for jobs that exist today and for the jobs that have not even been thought of yet”

Since the lesson, it’s been fantastic to find out that the content creation project is to become a scheme of work for Year 8 and GCSE pupils. Lots of credit needs to go to the staff and pupils at the Academy who all put a great amount of effort into creating some outstanding pieces of work. A big thanks needs to go to Mr Gary and Mr Sibbald from the Academy who have lead this project with us.

The next stage for the Content Creation project is further meetings with the academy to see how we could expand this scheme of work further. We are also planning to pull together packs of resources so similar projects can take place in any of our network of schools. More news coming soon!

4D Pop Up – launch events and lots of great feedback!

4dpopupmediacity

Last week, guests from across the North West joined us for the launch of 4D Pop Up.

The two events, held in Liverpool and MediaCityUK, gave attendees the chance to experience our most flexible space yet. Simple to set up, it means you can have an immersive space ready to use in a matter of minutes. At the end of a session, 4D Pop Up is easy to store and quick to transport to another venue.

Guests attended from a variety of settings including primary, secondary and SEN schools as well as those working in museums, art galleries and in health care settings. It was great to get some feedback on the 4D Pop Up and how it could be used in a variety of ways.

“Amazing! Can’t imagine how I’ll not use this in school!”

“4D Pop Up awakens the imagination!”

“Looks fantastic – really draws you in and makes you want to ask questions”

“Really impressed – attractive space and so compact!”

On Thursday we took the 4D Pop Up to the Kidz In The Middle exhibition in Coventry. This day long event is for parents with disabled children and it was inspiring to see the reactions of young people experiencing a trip into the 4D Pop Up. It also was great to attend an exhibition and be able to set up a whole immersive space in ten minutes!

World Book Day 2013 – What we’re reading!

world-book-day

As it’s World Book Day today we thought we’d share with you what the 4D Team are currently reading. Storytelling goes to the heart of what we do at 4D and the immersive spaces we create are ideal for setting the scene for a creative writing session.  I’m sure lots of our immersive spaces are being used for exciting storytelling sessions today!

Let’s find out what keeps the 4D team occupied on the daily commute to the office:

Matilda -Roald Dahl (Louise – Account Manager)

My son Riley got given the Roald Dahl box set for Christmas so we’ve been working our way through all the classics.  Riley loves Matilda and thinks it’s hilarious. Bruce Bogtrotter eating the giant cake has been his favourite bit so far. He fell asleep as I was reading to him the other night, I was enjoying myself so much I carried on reading without him!

Beyond A Joke – Inside the dark minds of stand-up comedians by Bruce Dessau (Gav – Teaching and Learning Associate)

I am reading Beyond a Joke as it feeds into my second love outside of work, comedy. Third if you include family of course.  Watching it, reading about it, seeing comedy live, all these pursuits offer a great distraction from reality.  This book examines the image of all comedians as being damaged and flawed in some way. I have met a few along the way with my other distraction, The Funny Looking Podcast and they have all come across as rather sweet and ordinary people.

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy (Inés – Office Administrator)

I’ve just finished All The Pretty Horses and loved it so am on the lookout for a new one! Set in post-war America, All the Pretty Horses follows two teenage cowboys, John Grady Cole and Lacey Rawlins, who ride south into Mexico in search of new adventures. They meet a young and somewhat odd boy called Jimmy Blevins along the way, who turns their journey into something much darker than they could ever have expected. It’s slow, atmospheric and beautifully written, and McCarthy’s simple yet stunning descriptions of the Wild West’s sounds, light, and spaces make you feel like you’re right in the middle of it all – a bit like a 4D space I suppose! Granted, it’s a bit of an oldey, but the perfect book to delve into when it’s horrible and grey outside!

Inverting The Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson (Pete – Marketing and Communications)

Inverting The Pyramid is a discussion on the history of football tactics and makes me feel like a massive loser every time I read it on the tram! Football is something I’ve loved for as long as I remember and over the last couple of years I’ve really enjoyed finding out more of the history of the game. Inverting the Pyramid takes you right back to the start, explains how football developed and then how different people have interpreted the game.  Thankfully the writing is excellent and there’s lots of fascinating characters explained in great detail to keep the book from becoming a total bore. It also fuels me for post match discussion in the pub!

If you’re a proper football geek like me you should also check out The Blizzard which is a quarterly magazine come book that is full of great articles from the world of soccer.

The Flying Scotsman: The Graeme Obree Story (Mark – Designer)

The Flying Scotsman is the autobiography of the twice cycling world hour record holder Graeme Obree. He’s a pretty inspiring guy. He basically turned the cycling world on it’s head when a relatively unknown rider from Scotland broke the world record on a bike he built in his kitchen, using parts from a washing machine! Not going to lie, it’s a brutally honest and bleak account on the dedication and lengths you have to goto to be a world beating sportsman.

There’s a really cool documentary on Youtube about his rivalry with Chris Boardman in the early 90’s here. Graeme’s currently working towards beating the World Human Powered Land Speed record at 47 years of age. Of course it’s on an unusually designed prone bike he’s building out of  among other things pots & pans! You can follow his progress here.

4D creative’s first health care space

upcoming-events

4D creative have just completed our first installation in a health care setting.

4D creative and Mersey Care have entered into a joint arrangement to test out the impact of using technology to create an immersive experience for those suffering from dementia, their carers and the practitioners involved in their care. An immersive space has been installed in the Clarence Ward at Stoddart House and the joint arrangement will run from March – August 2013.

Mersey Care have commissioned 4D creative to work with the ward staff, carers and service users to create immersive experiences that will benefit them all as a whole. The work is a joint venture between 4D creative and Mersey Care and is an inspirational opportunity.

This is a really exciting development for 4D creative and is the start of our plans to diversify how we create immersive experiences and the impact they create. We have seen great results across all age groups in education and we are excited to see how our concept can be expanded to new sectors and user groups.

As an ongoing piece of research there will be regular updates on our space at Stoddart House.  If you’d like further information on this or any of our spaces, just get in touch.

Manchester Communication Academy Content Project 3

MCA2

Our ongoing project with Manchester Communication Academy is reaching it’s final weeks so we visited the Academy to catch up on their progress.

Gav, our teaching and learning associate, met with the pupils to take them through the review stage of their content creation. This is a vital stage in creating immersive themes as it’s when key tweaks can take place. Gav gave the class some quick tips on sourcing higher quality images and working with iMovie to create outstanding content. These little tweaks will take the pupils already high standard of work to the next level.

It was great to meet the class again and hear them enthusiastically explain the content they have produced so far. The module is all about creating aspirational and motivating themes and the pupils have sourced lots of fantastic images to create some powerful  images in Photoshop and iMovie. From Olympic hero Jessica Ennis  to inspirational leader Martin Luther King, the classes work is full of dramatic photos and motivational quotes.

The pupils will be presenting their work in a couple of weeks and members of the 4D team will be visting the Academy to see the finished content. Following the completion of the project, the school will be writing a full case study and there will be a full write up on our website.

If you’ve missed the first two articles in the series, catch up here and here.

4D Exchange II

4dexchnage2

We held our second 4D exchange recently and once again it was a session packed full of discussion and great tips on working in an immersive space.

4D exchange is a chance for practitioners working in one of our spaces to share ideas, learn advance use of our software and network with other schools.

It was great to welcome a range of schools to 4D Exchange II and it made for a lively and enjoyable afternoon. We started with the Technical Champions session where our development manager Nick shared lots of really helpful tips. The session on setting bespoke lighting states was particularly appreciated and gave guests new ways of creating the perfect atmosphere for their lessons. Practitioners also had a chance to ask more specific questions about their own spaces for some quick tips on using our software.

Following this, our Teaching and Learning Associate Gav lead the Creative Champions session. This section of the afternoon is all about sharing teaching ideas and resources. Gav spends lots of time working with our content creation teams so shared lots of advice on how to create outstanding images, videos and soundscapes.

It was fascinating to hear practitioners sharing their own ideas on how they use their immersive space. Newfield School have recently been using their space to learn about the industrial revolution. This features giant images of factories, the sounds of people working and, for a special treat, the pupils got the chance to taste some authentic gruel! It’s also great to hear how pupils are using the interactive floor as part of their learning but also to met physical targets at the same time.

We must say a big thanks to Orford Park Jubilee Centre for hosting 4D Exchange and providing us with a great setting for our afternoon of discussion.

Our third 4D exchange for the summer term will be announced in the coming weeks so keep your eyes on our website, newsletter and Twitter page for the latest news.

Manchester Communication Academy Content Project 2

mca-content-project

As we mentioned last month, 4D creative have been commissioned by Manchester Communication Academy to run a content creation project.

Year 8 pupils have been asked by Year 7 teaching staff to create multimedia content as part of a unit on “Exploring the arts as a participant media”. Pupils will explore and use image manipulation and video editing software to create a dynamic video product using still images and backing audio. The piece of work will attempt to tell a story or convey a message based on the feelings and emotions a chosen piece of music was intended to evoke.

Curating content in this way gives the Academy lots of positive outcomes. The Year 8 pupils are getting a new unit of work which develops a variety of skills, from communication and literacy to image manipulation and ICT skills. Whilst Year 7 staff and pupils will have a dynamic lesson to work with specially created for them. The academy as a whole are also getting lots of high quality content for their immersive space which can be used across the curriculum. As a company, we love seeing how our spaces develop over time and this project is a great example of what can be achieved. Empowering pupils with the responsibility to curate lessons is also a really powerful tool and we can’t wait to see the results.

Gav and Pete from our team met with the class recently to introduce the pupils to 4D create, the software that powers our immersive spaces. Gav explained what made great content and how manipulating images can help get the pupil’s message across.

Finally, the class were taught how to upload their finished videos, pictures and sounds to 4D create using the simple drag and drop menus. It was very exciting to hear how the pupils planned to use the space and how quickly they learnt how to work with 4D create.

The Academy are also running a series of blogs on the project which you can read here and here –  we thoroughly recommend these. There’s still lots more to come from the project which we will be mentioning here very soon. Click the photos below for a slideshow of our morning at the 4D demo space.
